Asheville Trailblazers Are State Champs in NC
(posted May 17th) -
It was a nail biter, but after 100 minutes of tough as nails soccer, the Asheville Trailblazers defeated the Fayetteville Crusaders 3-2 to win their 5th NCHEAC State Girls Soccer Championship.
The tournament, played in Winston-Salem on May 3 and 4th, featured two semi-final games on Friday. The Trailblazers, seeded #1, defeated the rebuilding Cabarrus Stallions 9-0, while Fayetteville defeated the Forsyth Eagles 7-6 in an overtime game ending in penalty kicks.
The Trailblazers headed into the championship game after having defeated the Crusaders 5-1 earlier in the season. They scored first at 49 minutes with an unassisted goal by Mary Rachael Bulkeley. It appeared that it would be a one goal game, but with 35 seconds left in regulation time, Crusader's Valerie Poling scored, sending the game into overtime.
Asheville began overtime with a goal at 81 minutes by Abby Leahy (asst. Elizabeth Guffey) which was answered with a goal by Fayetteville's Sandy Strong at 84 minutes. Then, with 45 seconds to go in the second overtime, Elizabeth Guffey scored off of a corner kick by Abby Leahy and the Trailblazers hung on to win 3-2.
Asheville has won the NCHEAC State Championship four previous years, 2008-2011 and were runners up in 2012 to the Forsyth Eagles. The Trailblazers are coached by Steve and Cindy Woody.
