Information for home-schooled students
Students who were home schooled for any part of high school (grades nine through 12) must now register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. The eligibility center will determine whether student-athletes will be eligible for practice, competition and institutional financial aid at an NCAA Division I or Division II institution during their freshman year.
The eligibility center will perform preliminary and final certification reports for home-schooled students. The preliminary analysis of a student's academic record will enable the student to become aware of any deficiencies in their academic record and allow the student to rectify those deficiencies prior to high school graduation.
It is important to note that before a preliminary certification may be performed, the eligibility center must receive the Transcript Release Form (or registration form, which may be completed via the Internet), the registration fee, a transcript with at least six semesters represented, and official test scores on the ACT and/or SAT.
After high school graduation, once the eligibility center receives the student's final transcript and proof of graduation, the eligibility center will perform a final certification.
Home-schooled students should register with the eligibility center by visiting the eligibility center Web site at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. From there, click on "Prospective Student-Athletes," then "U.S. Students Register Here" and follow the prompts.
After registering, the home-schooled student must send the
following information to the eligibility center:
- Standardized test score(s) must be on an official transcript from a
traditional high school or be sent directly from the testing agency;
- Transcript listing credits earned and grades (home-school
transcript and any other official transcript from other high schools,
community colleges, etc.);
-
Proof of high school graduation;
-
Evidence that home schooling was conducted in accordance with
state law; and
- List of texts used throughout home schooling (including text
titles, publisher and in which courses the text was used)

Maximize Your Training like the Pros
HSPN has launched a new campaign tailored to the serious athlete and coach interested in healthy supplements for training and diet to perhaps enhance their
performance. Executive Director, Chris Davis, recently became an Advocare distributor (thanks to my brother!) after using one of their many products and
reading all of the endorsements (see upper right corner). At the age of 47, I run 3 miles a day, I am anxious to see what affect Advocare will have on my afternoon "crash".
This is a perfect fit for what HSPN does - promote and help homeschool athletes, coaches and parents. For information (there is a lot!) and product endorsers, simply start here.

Why Not Get Started Today?
An Army lieutenant wrote me a note the other day and in summary it said " I look back over the
years and all the people that have come and gone and its great knowing that on any given Thursday
I can go to one of the few soccer fields or basketball courts in the Front Royal area and find you coaching.
It's been an honor to play for you and to have known someone so dedicated and committed. I really appreciate it."
Whether your goal is simple recreation or you have kids with D-1 aspirations, it doesn't matter: YOU WILL TOUCH LIVES AND YOUR LIFE WILL BE FOREVER BLESSED.
Here, on this HSPN web-site, you should find all of the arsenal you need (we even bring in the Spiritual Ammunition at the Pep Rally). I only wish that when I started coaching over 15 years ago that
I had just a few of these "weapons".
So explore around, send questions, post to others, but feel confident that over 700 homeschool organizations stand behind you and have
"been-there, done-that".

| Advancement in Homeschool Sports in the Past 15 Years
Steady Progress - Thanks to Committed Pioneers
by Coach Chris Davis, Executive Director of HSPN
What a Contrast
With the advent of e-mail, internet, wide-acceptance of homeschooling in general, and the welcoming of homeschoolers into college
and the military today, those of you in your beginning or early years of homeschool sports might want to read this article to appreciate what we pioneers didn't have back then.
Where We Were Back in the 90s
I'm far from being the originator of homeschool sports, many started before me, but I can still remember my very first "sports day" back in the early nineties. My only regret was to be so isolated from the early pioneers who were already established and were blazing the trails. Since I can only speak of the Virginia happenings back then, I want to acknowledge the Beach Breakers (Virginia Beach) for being the pioneers for our state. I admired them from a far (more like 5 hours away) and they inspired me to get my first sports program up and running. 16 years later and 2,000 coached games later, I am still here, and so are the Breakers. And let's not forget those pioneers who had already figured out how to put tournaments together, Tim Flatt, Thomas Scheino, Pascal Redfern and others, while most of us were just cutting our teeth in the
sports movement.
To all of you other early pioneers in the other states, I say "thank-you" as well, and it is one of the goals of HSPN to document your efforts and great stories and get you in the Homeschool Museum and Hall of Fame some day. I really solicit your stories, especially from those early days. Another goal (2009) is to have the opportunity sit down with many of the sports leaders at one time and make it an annual event.
"Athletic Scholarships for Homeschoolers Back Then, You Gotta Be Kiddin'?"
While we were so busy fighting the system - trying to get facilities - and improving our looks from T-shirts to actual uniforms, we still had to deal with establishment of the private and public school sports teams to "get our foot in the door". Getting the attention of the colleges just wasn't quite on the radar.
Many of us had to work hard to "sell" the idea of homeschool sports, proudly using the "C-word" - Competitive and trying to get parents on board during an era when homeschooling was blossoming. For me, sports was THE thing that increased the membership of our support group, at one time I had 200 kids doing soccer. Ironically, there was a period of time where the only outside competition to a sports program were the occasional field trips. Eventually, co-ops and a whole slew of homeschooling activities became the norm. This gave a platform to us coaches to be able to "preach" commitment and to encourage these great kids on how to juggle a busy schedule. (Today we deal with "dual-enrollment", umbrella and virtual "schools", and the search for a defining what a homeschool student is these days :)
While homeschooling leaders were our shield in defending "Socialization" by writing books, holding workshops, and defending us on TV and radio, many coaches were thrilled to see the "paper" come out and feature one of their teams in an article - even though we always had to set the reporter straight about what true socialization is - and sports had nothing to do it.
At some point, homeschooling became in vogue, admired, and somewhat accepted virtually everywhere. Later on, it was as if homeschool sports found its stride and it just began to click. We started to hear and see homeschool teams playing homeschool teams on a regular basis. When I created the HSPN web-site in 1997, its only purpose was to unite and organize the Virginia teams by posting and identifying the team contacts and help new groups get started. Suddenly, requests and postings began to trickle in from other states, as well as request from parents begging to find a team or asking for help in getting started (hence, the publication of our handbook). 12 years later, over 800 homeschool organizations nationally are now posted on the HSPN site. (please post yours).
We have a great cycle of maturing leagues and conferences, Tournaments, World Series and an explosion in the number of teams. We know in some states that homeschool teams are able to compete against Public schools, while in every state, homeschool teams are in the mix with Private, Christian and rival homeschool teams. It is simply, beautiful!
Breaking Barriers
Many a coach can remember being laughed at or snubbed from the "establishment" way back in the startup days. But rather than march on Washington making demands, we pressed forward, kept the faith, and with blood, sweat and tears, we persevered. And wouldn't you know it, now we find ourselves under the lights playing high school TACKLE FOOTBALL. We have homeschool kids with free rides to Division I schools on athletic scholarships. How many of this year's Olympians are home educated? Every homeschool tournament has more teams than it can handle, and as I am writing this, 2 new teams have just been posted. We even have a homeschool-specific insurance policy for general liability available to any homeschool sports organization. read policy
With God, all things are possible!

Using the team locator page , click on your state. In the left column you'll see all the current organizations and teams, most with contact information
Second, take a look at the right column. There you will find requests from people like you, looking for something for their kids. Fill out the Request Form - your request is posted immediately. If your see any posted requests from an area near you, you may want to contact those families
At this point, your request remains on the HSPN web-site until you tell us to remove it.
If you want more exposure.... HSPN can broadcast your request to an even wider audience. Rather than waiting for your request to be found, HSPN can get your request to the coaches, teams AND homeschool support groups in your area.
Third, it is a fact that many of the homeschool coaches are moms and dads who have taken the challenge. "Handbook for a Successful Homeschool Sports Program"
Excerpt...
One day on the soccer field, a ten year old homeschooled
girl is accidentally knocked down by an older, 11-year old homeschooled boy.
During a typical homeschool sports day, these minor infractions are almost
commonplace. Ten years later after this little tussle, that boy and girl were
united in marriage, they both graduated from a major college, and within the
last year, became first-time parents. I was the coach back then directing the
sports program (oblivious to the run-in) and the same coach that attended the
wedding (now coaching their siblings). I had lunch with the couple this summer
at a small restaurant where they introduced me to the staff as the “person
responsible for us becoming a couple”.
WHAT AM I GETTING INTO? For whatever reason(s) you elected to
educate at home, you definitely have the same opportunity to fulfill with sports
– homeschool style! Across the country, the differing levels of athletics could
equate to the extra-curricula activities that homeschoolers do all the time:
Think of a low-key PE get together as field trip, possibly done once a week.
Many sports programs are designed to be competitive (and there are sub-levels of
those) which you could equate to co-ops that, let’s say, put on drama
productions, compete in spelling bees/science fairs, Bible Bowls and so forth.
But the basic challenge and goal still is to train and develop our Soldiers for
the Lord’s Army.
Sports are just one of the many outlets that have become
very popular within the homeschool movement. Like the Dad who takes the journey
to help his son achieve his Eagle Scout status, many fathers are taking the
voyage with their children in a Coach/Player relationship. And many “Coach Moms”
have stepped into the arena as well. It is good cause with a great mission lying
ahead as homeschoolers get their opportunity to deliver sportsmanship “the way
God Intended”. Since starting the Homeschool SportsNet back in 1997, our
collection of articles, e-mails and phone calls contain success stories covering
the spectrum of homeschool athletics from soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming
and golf to football ( yes, football!) and all sports in between.
