U-15 co-ed 3, St Joe's 5 Played in Inwood, WV Missing several starters, poor defense and sloppy play had the Flames trailing 4-0 at halftime. For the second half, Coach changed to a 4-4-2 organization giving the "green light" to the two strikers: Jacob Digges, and Nathan Jerge. The Flames were able to score 3 goals from this adjustment while only giving up one more. Newcomer Blair Jacques played great man-marking defense, Ryan Apgar and Sierra Sweet anchored the defense.
Flames U-15 Boys 0, RMA Middle School 1 Played at RMA Middle School The boys gave up a early goal in the first half, but decided to play hard and not allow any more scores. This U-15 team is definitely beginning to work as a unit, ready to be the next Varsity team of the future.

Flames Varsity 2, RMA 2 (Overtime and Shoot-Out) coach's note: The best Varsity boys game in Flames history. Extra-exciting!!! This time we had the speed on the front line and also with our defensive backs. While the forwards were outracing the Jacket's defense, our defense put up their big red wall surrounding any attackers with double and triple teams. Goalkeeper Eric Hotek kept busy recording 18 saves. RMA got off to a quick lead scoring within the first few minutes of the game. On an assist from Casey Davis, Jordan Horn tied the score. The first half ended 1-1. In the second half, the Flames scored again off of corner kick from Ben Digges to Jordan Horn. For nearly 20 minutes, the Flames went in to full defensive mode, shutting down any attacks that the Jackets could muster. A loose ball in the box allowed for a quick shot that tied the score at 2-2. On a break away, Jordan Horn just missed far post with just minutes left in the game. Regulation ended 2-2. During overtime, the "Red Wall" kept RMA from getting any shots, while providing the Flames a chance for several counter attacks. Neither team scored in overtime. During the first shoot-out, Ben, Jordan and Josh Jerge made 3 PKs, but so did the RMA crew, so ending the first shoot-out in a 3-3 tie. Tyler Sachtleben and Jesse Sampogna (yeah, him!) scored PKs in the second round, but RMA did as well. The shoot-out ended 5-5 and so this game ended officially as a 2-2 tie. Wow!
Flames U-19 3, Valley Campaign 3 Played at Rivendell Club (due to wet fields at Sherando) This game went back and forth. Trailing 3-2, Josh Jerge made a great pass in the face of the goal as Jordan Horn timed it perfectly and sliding in for the deflection.
U-15 Boys 7, Valley Campaign 3 Played at Rivendell Club (due to wet fields at Sherando) Nice teamwork! Nicolas White led the team with 4 goals. Great goal tending by Dusty and Levi
U-15 Girls 0, Valley Campaign 1 Played at Rivendell Club (due to wet fields at Sherando) The girls played a great game. Considering there were boys on the other team, it didn't keep our gals from playing hard.
Other Scores: Boys Varsity Roll Over Massanutten 4-1 Played at Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock After scoring in the second minute of the game, the Flames Varsity never looked back capturing their first victory over MMA. With only 12 players suited up, the boys played smart soccer and communicated well. For the most part the defense played solid as one unit, sometimes man-to-man marking; other times zonal coverage. The front line forwards maintained their assault on the 3-back defense of MMA. The mid-fielders won most of the battles in the center of the field. Eric Hotek made six saves and had an assist! Casey Davis scored the hat-trick, scoring twice in the first half and late in the second half during a pounding rain. Ben Digges scored on a PK in the second half.
Boys Varsity Come Up Short in Hagerstown, Lose 4-3 Played at Broadfording Christian School in Hagerstown, MD Sometimes a team plays so well that they deserve to win, but a couple of "bad bounces" changes the outcome. Nevertheless, the Flames Varsity team did play a good game, showing a lot of hustle and played quite sharp considering it was their first game. True to form, while the other team was getting on their own players, our guys would have none of that and stayed focused and upbeat.
U-15 Lose Close Season Opener : Riverfront 4, Flames 3 Played at Hilda J Barbour Fields, Front Royal With a roster size of 28 players, the U-15 is distinguishing itself as a balanced team even when the second unit replaces the starters.

U-15 Ties Riverfront 2-2
U-12, U-10 Post Wins Over Riverfront School
U-19 Defeats SVA 3-0 Led by "Mr Hat Trick" Ben Digges, the U-19's suffocating defense kept SVA off guard most of the game. Ben Digges scored once on an unassisted corner kick, then on a long "pass" that was mishandled by the keeper plus a finished goal with assist-leader Casey Davis. Overall great team play from this co-ed team playing in their season opener. New player Tyler Sachtleben was a great addition to the team.
Varsity Boys Mount Comeback, but Fall to Fresta Valley 6-3 Bringing only 12 players - but no guests - the Flames took on the Fresta Valley Varsity boys team at their home field. The first half featured great hustle, and superb man marking by Matt Biggs. Halftime score : 2 to 1 in favor of Fresta. Jesse Sampogna headed in a close range goal right before half.
The deficit soon grew to 4-1, when the Flames offense took it up a notch and scored 2 goals within minutes of each other. With assists from Allen McGee and Jesse Sampogna, Casey Davis scored twice cutting the lead to 4-3. Despite great hustling defense, Fresta managed 2 more unanswered goals to take the game 6-3. Eric Hotek made several remarkable saves in this game.
Varsity Boys Lose to Wakefield Country Day School, JV Boys Win Wakefield attacked with 3 speedy forwards which kept the defense busy. Assembling many 'guest' homeschoolers from around the area made it difficult for the Flames to find any rhythm. Although they had many chances, most of the game was spent marking their fastest players. Trailing 1-0, Casey Davis' shot from the right wing passed through the Wakefield keeper, tying the score. A Wakefield PK put them ahead 2-1 at half-time, (the Flames had missed their own PK). In the second half, the Owls opened up their attack and scored several easy goals. Ben Digges netted a PK for the Flames only score of the 2nd half. Final score, Wakefield 6, Flames 2. In the earlier game, the Flames JV Boys (U-14) had little trouble with their counterparts. Elias Hotek scored 2 goals along with 3 assists. Stephen Tamas also scored a pair and had 1 assist. Final score, Flames 4, Wakefield 0
Varsity Boys open season with 1-1 Tie with MMA. Visiting Massanutten Military Academy for the first time, the Flames Boys seemed very comfortable. Utilizing a few players from the Woodstock homeschool team, the Flames scored early in the first half with a Davis-Digges combination. There were many missed opportunities throughout the game for the offensive attack. MMA scored towards the end of the half on a Penalty Kick. The second half featured solid defense and quick counter attacks, but nothing found the net. Matt Biggs, Adam Parker, Allen McGee and Eric Hotek were outstanding in defense Jesse Sampogna, Jordan Horn, Ben Digges and Casey Davis kept the offensive pressure on the MMA defense for the most part of the game. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.
U-19 Impressive in Victory Over Alumni
It was a really terrific and fun time to reunite some former Flames players to take on
this year's U-19 team. The Alumni team fared well considering they hadn't played together
in a while.
But the biggest surprise was watching our U-19 move the ball with ease. As one Alumni
said " it was like a fine-oiled machine!"
For yours truly it was great to have those "old-timers" back in the fold once again for this
event. Thus, a new tradition is born!

Spring 2003 Soccer Season Flames Make it to 4 Championship Games at Spring Tournament Our U-19, U-12, U-10 and U-8 teams all hit their stride and put together great tournament play. All of the teams advanced to the championship game. Our young U-15 team faced tough competition finishing in 4th place. For final standings and scores, read the tournament results . U-15 Closes Out Regular Season with a 2-2 Tie Normally, the U-15 team doesn't play a game right after practice, but with the rainy spring season fitting a game in otherwise became a tricky task. After a light practice and an hour's rest, the U-15 began its pre-game warmups as the rest of the Flames groups left for home. The Valley Revolution from New Market found their way to Ed Stump Field and soon the game was underway. The visitors proved their might and speed as they dominated the field and scored 2 early goals. The Flames U-15 seemed somewhat shell-shocked and the defense's organization was breaking down. Coach Davis went to the bench and inserted some U-15 players that had been promoted to the U-19 squad this year: Jordan Horn, Josh Jerge and Casey Davis. Ben Digges was not available. This insertion seemed to balance the game with the Flames suddenly making runs and a few shots on goal. This helped the defense to regroup and adjust to the speedy opponent. The half ended 2-0 in favor of the Revolution. In the second half, the Flames went on an agressive attack constantly serving the ball deep into the defense. Ryan Apgar got his first assist with a nice crossing pass from the left side to Casey Davis who put in the first Flames' score. Shortly thereafter, Jordan Horn, on a heads-up play, drove a misplayed ball through the keeper's hand to tie the game. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.
U-19 Victorious Over Timber Ridge For a game that almost didn't happen, it was definitely interesting to watch. Just minutes before kick-off, both teams were told that the field at Sherando Park was closed due to the hard rain earlier in the day. The teams settled for moving the game to one of the practice fields with fresh cut grass covering the field, and soft mud lying beneath that. Jesse Sampogna scored two early goals and Josh Jerge scored one to take a 3-1 half-time lead in the grassy soup. Timber Ridge stormed back in the second half using their speed guys to score two goals tying the score at 3-3. The Flames began to play ball control, moving the ball at will, with many shots on goal. Finally, the scoring returned as Traci Heuser headed in a great corner kick from Josh Jerge to take the lead. Later, Ben Digges scored from the left flank with an unassisted goal. Final score: Flames U-19 5, Timber Ridge 3
U-19 Shuts Out Woodstock, U-15 Falls Once again, the U-19 defense played terrific team defense, limiting the Woodstock Spirit to just 10 shots on goal. Daniel Clark, Adam Parker and Matt Biggs were defensive standouts. Meanwhile the front line offense and mid fielders kept the pressure on from early in the first half to the very end. Although the offense was marred with too many missed chances, they worked hard to score the 2 goals in the second half. Ben Digges scored when Casey Davis sent a dangerous cross right in front of the goal box which was muffed by the keeper and then chipped in from close range. Later, Jesse Sampogna, drilled a shot from 20 yards out. Final score: Flames U-19 2, Woodstock-Spirit 0 In the second game, the Flames U-15 met their match against Woodstock's younger team. Newcomer Allen McGee scored the game's first goal, but Woodstock roared back to score 3 unanswered goals before the half. In the second half, the Flames' defense tightened, but the offense just couldn't get on track. Towards the end of the game, relief came in the form of the young U-19 players who had moved up to the U-19 squad this season. For their brief game appearance, the front line of Ben Digges, Jordan Horn, Josh Jerge and Casey Davis did manage to score when Ben Digges scored late in the game. Final score: Spirit 4, Flames 2
U-19 Victorious Against RCA 6-0 Awesome defense, great passing, communication and accurate shooting made up all the ingredients to a terrific game by the Flames U-19 team. Five players scored with Jordan Horn scoring twice. Casey Davis added 2 assists, while Matt Biggs, Adam Parker and Daniel Clark played great defense. Final score: Flames 6, RCA Eagles 0
Flames Teams Play Well in Weyers Cave At the Weyers Cave Community Park, all five Flames teams competed against the Campaign from Harrisonburg. A Franklin Park in Purcellville, the Freedom hosted the Flames soccer teams. The U-8s,U-10s and U-15s played during the first hour. The U-12 and U-19 games followed those.
U-19 Comes Up Short at Timber Ridge 5-4 A very well played game on both sides. The Flames actually had more shots on goal than Ridge did, but just couldn't execute when they needed to. Single and double man marking was a key to slowing down Ridge's front line. Matt Biggs and Daniel Clark performed that task well. Offensively, Ben Diggs and Josh Jerge scored all four goals, while Casey Davis supplied 2 assists. Final score: Timber Ridge 5, Flames 4
Flames Teams find success in Loudoun County At Franklin Park in Purcellville, the Freedom hosted the Flames soccer teams. Teams from the U-6 to the U-19 divisions played in the afternoon. Playing simultaneously, the U-6s, U-8s, U-10s and U-12s played the early games. The U-15s and U-19s had the late games. Two separate U-6 Flames' teams each were victorious. The U-7 team scored a 4-1 victory. The 2 U-8 teams split a win and a loss. The U-10s played on a large field and held their own, completing a 2-0 victory. Meanwhile the U-12s were just tearing them up at field 4 with a 8-0 win. The U-15 team faced injuries and tough competition to squeeze out a 4-3 win. Rumor has it that some U-12 players were called in to action to replace the injured players and helped score the winning goal. Finally, the U-19 team ended up playing a Freedom team of coaches and players in a very hard fought game that ended in a 2-2 tie.
U-19 Wins Season Opener 8-0 After having their first 2 games rained out already, the U-19 team finally had beautiful weather for a spring soccer match. The Flames settled in to their rhythm early and with a balance of attacking and steady defense, they stayed organized and controlled the ball. Josh Jerge led the team with the hat-trick and one assist. Jesse Sampogna scored twice and several others scored one goal apiece. Matt Biggs and Adam Parker anchored a terrific defense, while Daniel Clark did an outstanding job as a defensive mid-fielder. Final score: Flames 8, RCA Eagles 0
Playin' in the Rain at RMA : Lady Flames Defeated 2-1 A steady rain created slippery conditions and little offensive attacks. In the first half, the Lady Flames out-shot RMA 8-3, also failing on penalty kick. By halftime, RMA led 1-0. In the second half, starting keeper Lydia Hotek came out of the game as a result of an injury. The second half was played evenly as the wet conditions slowed down the game. RMA snuck in another goal towards the end of the game. The Lady Flames quickly counterattacked and scored their only goal when Krista Parker pushed forward from the defensive end to put in a rebound miss from Teresa Asper. Final score: RMA 2, Lady Flames 1
Lady Flames Junior High defeats SVCA 5-1 It took the Lady Flames about fifteen minutes in the opening half to brush off the rust and begin playing team ball. After surrending their only goal, the team rose to the challenge and began slowly winning more possessions and controlling the middle of the field. With a 2-1 halftime lead, the ladies never looked back and attacked the Lady Patriots defense much of the second half. Final score, Lady Flames 5, Lady Patriots 1. Lydia Hotek played outstanding defense debuting as a goal keeper. Kelly Steigerwald also played excellent defense. Carly Guarino and Teresa Asper led the attack especially in the second half. Sierra Sweet also controlled the right flank as a mid-fielder, also scoring a goal.
Flames Soccer Program to Field Six Teams Nearly 85 soccer enthusiasts are participating in this spring's soccer program. The Flames adequately includes a team in the following age groups: U-6, U-8, U-10, U-12, U-15, U-19. Fall 2003 Soccer Season Flames U-17 co-ed team defeats RCA 7-2 Finishing their fall season on a good note, this game featured great passing, defense, teamwork and goals scored by five different players. Defensive standout, Adam Parker anchored a consistent and active defense. This year's newcomer, Jesse Sampogna, controlled the midfield directing passes and launching shots from the field. Other defensive standouts included Traci Heuser, Peter Asper, Eric Hotek and Lydia Hotek. The Flames led late 7-0 before making a keeper change and subbing the defense.
Flames Take Four More Games in Luray
Game 1 - Flames (U-13) vs DC United
Game 2 - Flames (U-13) vs Burn
Game 3 - Flames (U-13) vs Fusion
Game 4 - Flames (U-17) vs Stallions
Woodstock Spirit Crushes Flames 6-1 A rather evenly played first half, turned into a scoring spree in the second half by the Spirit. Down one goal in the first half, Traci Heuser ties the game during a Flames corner kick from Ben Digges, flicked on by Casey Davis to set up Traci's goal. The Flames came out flat in the 2nd half, and couldn't seem to find its defensive punch.
Flames Defeat RCA in a Shoot-Out The Flames' co-ed U-19 team played an evenly matched RCA team. In fact the first half ended with no score. In the second half, the Flames' trailed 1-0 after former Flames' player TJ Grindle scored on a tricky hop past goal keeper, Eric Hotek. The Flames tied the score when Casey Davis followed a mishandled ball by the RCA goalkeeper and put it high into the net. After that it became an evenly played game still tied at 1-1. Eric Hotek shut out the RCA shooters as Ben Digges and Jesse Sampogna clinched the shoot-out 2-0. While the Flames' outshot RCA 30-8, it was still a defensive battle. Defense leaders included Adam Parker, Jordan Horn, Traci Heuser. Lydia Hotek and Teresa Asper. Eric Hotek played standout goal keeper.

Flames' JV Boys Lose 2-1 to Randolph-Macon Outstanding goal keeping, smart defense, and quickness in the middle of the field, allowed the Flames' JV Boys to be in this game. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the coaches made no adjustments for the second half. Halfway through the second half, RMA scored again making the score 2-0. The Flames' became offensively aggressive keeping the ball at the RMA end. Finally, Reuben Tiemens played a ball through to Jordan Horn, who trapped it and shot left-footed for the goal. The Flames' had a few more shots on goal, hitting the posts and missing slightly to the left. As time ran out, Jesse Sampagno was close to a break away. A great game ended in RMA's favor, 2 to 1.
Spring 2002 Soccer Season Flames U-19 Lose to Timber Ridge In their final home game of the season, the Flames U-19 co-eds lose 6-2 to visiting Timber Ridge School for Boys. The defense tried its new off-sides trapping during the first half with limited success. In the second half, the defense played fairly well except for some lapses when easy goals were allowed. Paul Asper scored once in the first half, and Jordan Horn scored in the second half.
Flames U-19, U-12 travel south and split doubleheader in Woodstock In the first the game, the "fab-11" U-12 team did it again. They racked up another victory and posted their 5th shut-out in a row. Elias Hotek, Jacob Digges, Nathan Jerge and Levi Huston all scored. The U-19/U-15 combo team took the field next and led at half-time 1-0 on a Jordan Horn to Daniel Lucas goal. In the second half the defense play tough, but the Spirit found ways of getting through to win the game 2-1.
Flames, HC United Face Off in Apple Blossom Classic in Berryville On the beginning of the Apple Blossom Festival weekend, both groups got together in Clarke County U-15, U-12 and U-10 soccer teams were victorious. Our U-19 lost their game to a very quick and experienced HC United team. There was no report on the U-8 game. The U-19 team learned that by not taking care of the ball is a dangerous thing against a faster team. But true to form, the U-19 Flames "played their hearts out". Eric Hotek was outstanding in defense. The U-15 proved that passing works! Josh Jerge netted 2 goals, Eric Hotek had 2 goals and an assist, and Ben Digges scored a goal also. The U-12 team just exploded with offense with a 13-0 win over HC United. Jacob Digges scored 4 times, Levi Huston had 3 goals, Peter Asper and Elias Hotek each scored twice, and Nathan Jerge and Carly Guarino each scored once. The U-10 team had a fight on their hands, but came away the victors, 2-1.
Flames U-12 Victorious Over Riverton U-12 Flames continued their winning streak winning 4-0. The U-10 team was ahead after the 3rd quarter when storm conditions ended their game. A balanced scoring effort by the U-12 saw Peter Asper, Jacob Digges, Elias Hotek and Nathan Jerge each scoring a goal.
Flames Win Four Games Against Purcellville Our U-19, U-15, U-12 and U-10 soccer teams were each victorious in their games against the "Untouchables" from Purcellville. Played at Franklin Park, 4 games were played at the same time. Due to a scheduling mix-up, our brave U-8s ended up playing against an older U-10. It was amazing, that they only lost by 2-0. The U-19 team was led by Casey Davis who had 4 assists and a goal and Eric Hotek scored 3 goals and an assist. The U-14 team featured a hat trick from Ben Digges, two goals from Josh Jerge and one from Teresa Asper. Thanks to Bob Sweet for filling in as coach and on-field referee! The U-12 kept their winning streak alive with a 2-0 victory. Jacob Digges scored both goals. The U-10s had 2 players who scored 3 goals each: Isaac Jerge and Paul Guarino. Addie Conley also scored a goal.
Flames Win Two, Tie One Against HC United Before the thunderstorms hit, 2 games were able to complete, 1 was halfway through the second half, but two teams had their games rained out. The U-8s in their season opener were 2-0 winners at Ed Stump Park in Front Royal. The U-12s continued their winning streak (from last fall) to come out on top of HC United 6-0. Jacob Digges and Elias Hotek both scored twice, Peter Asper and Nathan Jerge each scored once. In a partially completed game, our U-19 Flames team came from behind just before the first half ended to tie the score at 1-1. On an assist from Casey Davis, Traci Heuser faked out the goal keeper for her first goal of the season.
Flames U-19 Combo Team Loses Home Opener to Woodstock 5-1
A very solid team from Woodstock spoiled the Flames' home opener by a score of 5-1. The Spirit maintained possession throughout the game keeping the Flames at bay.

Overtime in Woodstock: Flames 2, Spirit 1 Wow! In probably the most exciting and evenly played game since the old days playing LIFE, both teams drew a tie in the first half. The Flames may have had a slight advantage in Shots on Goal, but both teams featured strong goal keepers. Early in the second half, Kevin Roberts scored from 22 yards out. Shortly thereafter, the home team Spirit answered to tie the score at 1-1. The remainder of the half was played tight and very even. In the overtime, Eric Hotek scored from the far right flank with about 4 minutes left. When the final whistle blew, the Flames win on the road winning their 10th game in a row, tying a record set back in 1998-99.
"Coach Rachel" Wins Her First Game Having the challenge of positioning a combination U-10 and U-12 team and doing this on the road was no small task. With clipboard in hand, she handled it like a pro, getting players in and out with ease. After 3 scoreless quarters, her team found a way to the goal twice, coming out on top 2 - 0. Notice that this historic moment was even captured on video.
Way to go Coach! Flames Edge Out Royal Christian Academy 7 - 5 After giving 3 early goals, the Flames co-ed Teens found themselves behind 4 to 1 in the first half. Right before half, the Flames forwards took control scoring 3 consecutive goals before the half time whistle knotting the score 4 to 4. In the second half Kevin Roberts scored his 3rd goal of the game to put the Flames ahead 5-4. The RCA Eagles came back with their own attack led by former Flames, TJ Grindle, and tied the game at 5. That's when the Flames defense came together and shut down any more attacks. Kevin Roberts added the goal ahead with an assist from Dale Forrester. Casey Davis crossed in the insurance goal to cap the 7-5 victory and marking the 9th win a row for the Flames teen team. Paul Asper and Eric Hotek also scored a goal each.
Flames Boys Lose to Fresta Valley 8-2 After keeping the score 0 - 0 through most of the first half, our defense begin to lose the speed battle against Fresta's quick front line. Trailing 4-0 late in the first half, the Flames managed several attacks, keeping the ball in Fresta's defensive end for the last 10 minutes of the first half. By half-time the score was 4-1, after Kevin Roberts' goal. The second half featured attacks and counter attacks by both teams, but Fresta's sharp shooting found the goal 4 more times in the second half. Paul Asper crossed a pass to Thomas Furtado for the Flames only score of the second half.
Winning Streak Continues: Flames co-Ed Teens Defeat Woodstock 1-0 A very much improved and well-coached Woodstock Spirit visited Front Royal for an afternoon match with the Flames. Going back to last year, the Flames co-ed Teen teams have now won 8 games in a row.But this match with Woodstock proved to be a difficult one. After a scoreless first half, Paul Asper on the attack on the left flank, switched the point of attack to find Kevin Roberts all alone on the right wing for a 22 yard line drive for the game's only goal. These two teams will meet again in Woodstock in a couple of weeks.

After a 0-0 first half, Eric Hotek sent a cross to Ben Digges who one-touched it in for the only goal of the game.
In the second game, we were outmanned and outskilled losing 8-0. Eric Hotek played outstanding keeper.
Spring 2001 Soccer Season Recap Flames Blaze the Tournament Field: U-19 are Champs! We took 4 teams to the tournament, and 3 out of the 4 made it to the finals. The U-10 team, facing some older and more experienced teams, played really hard. Congratulations to Jackie Steigerwald on scoring her first soccer goal! Our U-12 team, had to endure a shoot-out in their first game against a very good Campaign team. A 3-2 shoot out in the Flames favor gave them their first tournament victory. They won their second game to advance to the finals. They took an easy 2-0 lead, before their opponents came storming back with 6 unanswered goals. Considering this Flames team had only played one game all season, fans were well pleased at their efforts all day long. Isaac Tiemens scored 3 goals during the tournamentMuch the same, the U-15 team, ended their first game in a shootout. Casey Davis, as he did all season long, made great saves in the shoot out to help his team win their first game. The second U-15 game was another hard fought contest with Eric Hotek scoring two goals and Thomas Furtado adding one more to claim their second victory and ensure them a trip to the finals. Due to time constraints, the finals game was shortened and ended in a tie. The Flames, while trying to a field a U-19 team, also in the finals, could not muster enough fire power to win the shoot out. Coaches Micah Flood and Ron Tiemens did a fabulous job with this team all day long. "I just knew they could do it!" says Coach Davis when his U-19 team was losing 3-1 late in the second half. A loss would mean no finals. "I encouraged and challenged them by reminding them that they had scored 5 and 6 goals in games before. I just wasn't worried" Sure enough the comeback started despite the overall team exhaustion - some players were playing their 4th game in a row. Thomas Furtado brought the team to within 1 goal, then moments later, Gabe Brown, tied the game and setting yet another shoot out. Our U-19 team won the shootout to advance to the finals - along the U-12 and U-15 teams- all playing at the same time. The opponent in the final was HC United, the team we just came from behind to beat. In the finals, the Flames held a 2-0 lead at halftime, then stretched it to 3-0 before HC United scored too easy goals. Through sheer determination and an empty tank, the Flames held on capture First Place in the U-19 division. They had just enough energy to dump the water cooler on their coach!! An UNDEFEATED U-19 Season! In their final regular season game before the state tournament, the Flames teams welcomed HC United to Ed Stump Park in Front Royal for 4 afternoon matches. Trying to remain unbeated, the Flames took a 1-0 halftime lead after Eric Hotek's PK. In the second half, the HC United team kept our defense busy scoring twice, but the defense prevented any more scoring as Kevin Roberts' 30 yarder goal from the left side, preserved the 3-2 Flames victory. Eric Hotek with an assist from Thomas Furtado, had scored earlier in the 2nd half. In the next match, our U-15 team could not stop a much faster team, and could not muster any offense and fell 4-0 to HC United. The U-12 team played to a 1-1 tie with Isaac Tiemens scoring on a PK in the first half. Isaac Huston and Peter Asper played great as goal keepers. The U-10 team ended in a 0-0 tie. Tory Guarino and Matthew Runion shut down the opponents with great goal tending. Winning Streak Continues The Flames U-19/U-15 combo team welcomed CHEC-Woodstock back to Ed Stump Park on May 17th. After posting a 1-1 halftime score, the Flames went to work in the 2nd half scoring 5 unanswered goals in the second half. Kevin Roberts and Eric Hotek both scored 2 goals, while Tara Roberts and Paul Asper scored. Casey Davis, Kevin and Tara Roberts had assists. As always, the defense, anchored by Joseph Kosten, played great as did goalkeepers Casey Davis and Gabe Brown. Flames Find Success on the Road Nearly 90 degrees in early May was tough enough let alone facing a very good HC United team on their home field. All 4 Flames made the trip to Berryville for an Apple Blossom afternoon of competition. Our U-19 team kicked off the first game, while our U-10 and U-12 combined with HC United teams for inter-squad scrimmage. On the main field, the Flames scored 2 quick goals by Paul Asper and Eric Hotek (assisted by Tara Roberts). Great defense and smart play allowed them to hold on for a 2-1 victory .In the second game, the Flames U-15 team in their first game of the season found themselves in a see-saw type of game with the score changing frequently in the second half. After a one-all tie at half-time, the Flames scored 3 more times including Tanya Huston's first-ever goal to hold on to a 4-3 victory. Eric Hotek got the hat-trick with a PK and 2 unassisted goals. Flames Win Season Opener 5-1 Call it inspired soccer, or whatever you like, but
the Flames U-19 group played very good soccer shutting out Woodstock until
the last 10 seconds of the match. Casey Davis played very good in his
debut as Goal Keeper filling in this season for Eric Hotek who is
recovering from a broken arm suffered during the basketball tournament. Flames Soccer Teams Battle the Wind, Cold The U-19, U-12, and U-10 teams made it through the
first practice of the season despite the high winds, chilly air, and the
'special' Ed Stump Park aroma. |
